The Procession of the Matrix

G1 Marvel Comics

PRIMUS

Primus before he became Cybertron
Primus is the Lord of the Light Gods and creator of the Transformers. The Matrix - variously referred to in the comics as the Creation Matrix or a Genetic Matrix - is a piece of his essence bestowed on his children as a weapon against Unicron and as a source of life.
PRIMA

Prima 1
Prima 2
The first Transformer, created from the fabric of Cybertron by Primus. First Prime and first bearer of the Matrix in any capacity. These two frames suggest Prima was created with the Matrix within him. Prima's date of creation, lifespan and final fate are unknown, but it seems to have been some considerable time before the lives of the general cast.

We can be reasonably sure this picture is of Prima, since it shows him demerging from the fabric of Cybertron.
PRIME NOVA

Prime Nova
Prime Nova is the second of the Primes, and no picture exists explicity connected with his name. This picture serves for Prime Nova since it's the only picture of a Prime who isn't obviously someone else. Nothing is known about Prime Nova - when he was built, who by, how he came to have the Matrix, when he passed it on, how he died - all is blank.

We can't even be certain that this picture is Prime Nova. It could be Prima, or Sentinel Prime, or someone else entirely. The Prime in this picture is not named or given much in the way of context in the comics. He's just there.
SENTINEL PRIME

Sentinel Prime passes the Matrix to Optimus Prime
Third Prime, origin unknown, died in battle and passed the Matrix to Optimus Prime.

This picture isn't named in context as being Sentinel Prime, but the comics consistantly name four and only four Primes - Prima, Prime Nova, Sentinel Prime and Optimus Prime - and since Sentinel Prime is the Prime before Optimus, and this guy is passing the Matrix to Optimus, it stands to reason that he's Sentinel Prime.
Or he could be a messanger sent to deliver the Matrix to Optimus after Sentinel's death. Or he could be the guy who killed Sentinel. Or any one of a dozen other possibilities.
OPTIMUS PRIME

Optimus preparing to surrender the Matrix to Buster
Optimus carried the Matrix from the death of Sentinel Prime until he was defeated by Shockwave, who yanked his head off with intent to use the Matrix within to give life to the combiner teams. To prevent this, Optimus downloaded the Matrix in program form into the mind of Buster Witwicky.
BUSTER WITWICKY

Buster exposits rather more clearly
Buster uses the Matrix to make a mess of Jetfire
Buster carried the Matrix in his brain for several weeks. The results were weird. Eventually Optimus was freed and reclaimed the Matrix.
OPTIMUS PRIME

Buster gives the Matrix back to Optimus
Optimus retained the Matrix until he faced Megatron in a computerised "honour duel", which Megatron won. Although Megatron cheated, Prime decided to have himself destroyed as he had compromised his principles in the game. His body - with the physical Matrix still inside - was shot into space. Optimus' memory and personality were retained on a floppy disk and eventually used to return him to life.

The Matrix Monster
Lost in space, buried in Optimus' inert carcass, the Matrix encountered a series of beings, the last of which it constructed into the monstrous creature seen here. In isolation, the Matrix had become corrupted by the desire for sensation and experience.
THUNDERWING

Thunderwing with the Matrix, part 1
Thunderwing with the Matrix, part 2
Thunderwing takes on Unicron
The Matrix-sensitive Decepticon Pretender Thunderwing defeated the Matrix monster in combat and took the Matrix for himself, not realising it was corrupt. It took over his mind, and both he and the Matrix were dumped into deep space by Nightbeat. Thunderwing was almost terminated but the Matrix slowly restored him, completing work in time to attempt to destroy Unicron of its own initiative. It failed.
OPTMUS PRIME

Optimus purges the Matrix
Optimus recovered the Matrix and was able to purge it of its corruption. He then used the Matrix to destroy Unicron, destroying himself in the process. Optimus lived on - somehow - within his binary-bonded Nebulan Powermaster, Hi-Q, who was converted into a new Optimus by the Last Autobot, apparently with a new Matrix within him.
RODIMUS PRIME

A quick review of the movie events
The events that led to the creation of Rodimus Prime did occur in the comicverse, but Galvatron's time-travelling caused both himself and Rodimus Prime to be erased from the timeline.
